This sake cup (ochoko) is 2.25" in diameter and 1.5" high. It is unmarked and hand made. It is irregularly shaped and shows no, or very little, wear from use. Like the other cup from this attic it is a bit on the large size for drinking sake, I think, but pretty certain that is its purpose. Probably Japanese. This is the second sake cup found by someone who was cleaning out their attic while downsizing and found a few pieces of Japanese pottery in various boxes. Their parents lived in the Far East in the late 1950s and sister in Japan in the mid-1970s, so this cup probably dates 1955.1975. It is doubtful that I will ever know more about this cup but I have started to put together a small collection of orphan sake cups and this one will fit right in. Each is a small work of art.

Thanks for taking a look at and loving my orphan sake cup aura, Thomas, Jenni, fortapache, dav2no1 and PhilDMorris! I christened it yesterday with some Gekkeikan Nigori sake, which I had not tried before. Tasty!

Japanese glazes are like no other.
No wonder the rest of the world learnt from them.

@kwqd, if you ever go to a Japanese izakaya (gastropub), you may be presented with a tray full of different ochoko and asked to choose your favourite to use for drinking.

Your collection of orphaned sake cups would be perfect for this, and if you ever invite friends over for an evening of sake tasting (say), you would be 100% authentic in including this satisfying little ochoko as part of the presentation to your guests.

P.S. I have a similar collection of mismatched sake cups :)
