Found at Little Bighorn site close to Custer's grave. Lange and Walsh Mfg Co. were a clothing manufacturer in New York City... not a military contract. Any suggestions on why it was there?

Congressional record of 1898 shows the company as a US Army contractor.

Not sure of all the years that they held contracts or particulars of the company.

If this is their only year of contracts, or if they only did contracts for a short period, then it suggests that this is "drop" about 20 years after LBH.

Your pictures are dark so it's hard to tell... but the button looks similar to this Civil War button made by different manufacturer. You have to look closely at the number of feathers and the design on the chest.

General Service button from 1875- 1902.

Based on online contracting information for the company (1898, 1901, 1903, 1904)-- the company appears to date from the latter part of the initial button bracket.

Almost looks like the "choked chicken" eagle used until the early 1800's.

I have also seen similar but from the Spanish American War. I thought buttons were made by guilders, not a clothing manufacturer. Weird stuff...
