Picked up this 1880's canvas covered roll top trunk yesterday. All interesting cast iron hardware with a little bow-tie detail if you will on the edge and an interesting brass lock both of which I personally have yet to see before. Also has the large #5 draw bolts and cast iron all-in-one dowel and handle holders. Measures in at 34L x 21D x 24T. No real interior but for a primer paint on top of wall paper on top of linen. Still maybe a maker name under the paper so that's yet to be seen. The lock has no maker name or marks. Both halves are surface mounted so no need for a cavity to be cut out for mounting. Jim did provide a patent & photo from 1879 for latches of the same format but simply not including the lock shown in photo 4. Definitely looks like a mans trunk. An interesting 1880's trunk example.

Thanks to the trunk people I now look for interesting locks on trunks. That is a good one.
Thanks Newfld, That's what I thought as well. Its really the hardware that makes or breaks a trunk. This one is very consistent with the all cast iron being its main predominant feature and it shows. To have them ALL the same pattern is from what I have seen.... is pretty rare. There is just one pressed steel piece which is at bottom center, where it should be. Mind you I will do with a variety of hardware in this flat top or roll top but it normally would be because it has a makers label as with my last two 1880's canvas and iron trunks . Thanks fortapache, It is certainly different isn't it and original to the trunk. That plus the matching cast iron I had to have it. Thanks for the comment. I think Brian and some others have been very lucky to find these beautiful locks. I myself have not been as lucky ....I have a few but not many. Thanks again and keep the eyes peeled!
