Stoneware wine (?) bottle from Portugal

This stoneware bottle is 9.75" high x 3.75" in diameter, stamped "Portugal" on the bottom and otherwise unmarked. It is fairly hefty weighing in at about 2 lbs 7 ounces. A standard wine bottle cork fits it and seals it solidly making the normal sound made when pulling a cork from a bottle. I assume it held wine, or some other edible liquid, and is food safe, but I am not certain of that. This is a thrift shop find from a couple of years ago and I think I paid under $1 for it. I bought it without a clear plan of what to do with it, just thought it was well made and potentially useful, but since I don't know if it is food safe, or not, it has been sitting outside on my back porch since I got home from the thrift shop. It has withstood the elements well, so I brought it in and cleaned it up. Guessing it is not very old. I found a couple of examples of this bottle using a Google image search and many similar Portuguese bottles made by specific manufacturers as wine bottles. Does anyone know what this bottle was used for?
