Here is an 1890's 5 Slat Monitor trunk I picked up and couldn't pass by, which is now my second. The body show metal covering condition is excellent as far as dings or dents. In this case it has my favorite the...Wheat Pattern.... That was really the killer for me, after looking at Brian's last MM and Trunkman's MM. Measures in at 32L x 18D x 23T. No maker label. I mentioned before I would prefer cast iron hardware verses the tin when it comes to a monitor trunk....but this one does have both the ends in all the iron hardware, so beggars can't choosers. It has a mostly complete interior with original tray, so that's always nice to see, I expected to find that missing piece still enclosed but ..no. Also on this one , it has an East-lake lock in a pattern I have yet to encounter, which makes it for me, 4 different patterns I have for East-lake Locks.
This trunk has been well looked after over the years and I am thrilled to own a wheat pattern trunk in any trunk style, so this one makes for a great addition from several angles. Hope you find it of interest!!

Hey Tom, nice trunk, not fond of the restoration on this one but it's a very nice trunk, I think it could be so much better, it's just to much one color for me. The wheat tin is one of my favorites and in ten years have only seen a hand full of trunks with it and this is the first monitor trunk I have seen, the other tin pattern I would like to find in good condition is the moon and stars I think it's a rare one also, I actually had this lock in this pattern but sold it, you don't see this one as much as the others, happy hunting.

Awesome trunk! Love the wheat tin & love that lock. I agree with Brian — too much black! I imagine you’re planning on fixing that situation!!

      Nice find!

Thanks Brian and Bigd338, Yes for sure to much black, I think he used a spray bomb but didn't sand it or clean it first. You can see the blotchy areas more concentrated to the bottom on the back and front of the end binding metal. Its a dry and semi coarse to the touch. It just needs to be done properly. The color I like for the wheat, is the one Brian has completed on the MM. So one needs to look beyond what is visible for sure. It would indeed end up being a very sharp looking trunk especially with no major or plentiful dings in the wheat. I am pleased to get one in the wheat pattern they look exceptionally nice. Thanks again for the love from you both.

Handsome trunk! I have the same lock. I’ve been trying to find out more about it. Is Eastlake the lock company name or is it the name of the pattern? I’ve been trying to find the key code….any ideas on where to look? I’ve stared at the echelon so long I think I’ve seen every letter and number in the tiny scratches. Thanks!
