This little elephant is about 5.5" long x 3.5" high x 2.5" wide, hollow, made of pot metal and plated with some mystery finish. "Made in Japan" was included in the mold on the belly of the elephant. What attracted me to this is that it is the polar opposite of the fine bronze dog by artist Sotaro Seagusa which I recently posted. While the Saegusa dog is made of fine bronze, lacks detail and was not made for export, this elephant is made of pot metal (mystery metal), has an exacting level of detail and was made for export, probably to the U.S. The Saegusa dog relies on implied attributes while this elephant relies on precise details and the natural attributes of the elephant. Maybe I am overthinking this, though, and it is just a nice little elephant statue. Nevermind!

An old wives tale says that an elephant figure, with it's trunk up, is supposed to represent good luck:)
    6. kwqd kwqd, 4 years ago
I've heard that and also that trunk down means that luck is stored for when it is needed:

      https://cyclopsblog.com/2015/06/25/elephants-trunks-up-or-down/#:~:text=An%20elephant%20with%20the%20trunk,elephant%20might%20be%20for%20you!

"An upward pointed elephant trunk dispenses energy, luck, prosperity and kindness. It is a movement elephants use to greet friends and express sheer delight. To bring compassion and to shower good fortune place the upward trunk elephant around you."

"An elephant with the trunk pointed downwards stores luck and energy. It is a symbol of wisdom and knowledge allowing you to easily overcome various tasks and obstacles. To stay grounded at work or to reserve strength and vitality at home, the downward trunk elephant might be for you!"

      And also:

"According to Feng Shui, while a raised elephant trunk symbolizes good mood, a trunk that is down means focus and sensuality. The trunk in the downward direction represents ability to solve challenges and longevity. Contrary to popular belief, an elephant trunk in the downward direction, does not mean bad luck."

Not sure if the symbolism is much different or not between India and Japan....

Trunks up means good look- I love how shiny and noble he is(like solid gold!) Do you think it's very possibly gold...? And it just wasn't marked/stamped as gold?

Thanks LaurenRedmond! It is not heavy enough to be gold. It might be gold plated......

Such a great object to offset the Saegusa dog.
      Both are wonderful.
