15 years ago I discovered this peculiar rock while excavating my foundation in the Deerpath subdivision of Wonder Lake, IL (Mchenry County). It was discovered about 2 ft below original grade on the edge of a steep hill. I always assumed it was a native American axe head but I have no expertise whatsoever. This is the first time I have posted a picture of it. Anyone have any knowledge of what this might be?
What a strange interesting item. Have you researched the local tribes in your area? Or have you tried to reach out to local historians or museums?
No not really. At least 10 years ago I looked into that a bit but can't remember the name of the tribe that lived in what is now Wonder Lake. I was hoping someone might recognize some features of this item that could link it to a time period, location or a tribe. For all I know it's just a rock that happens to look like an axe head. It almost looks too much like an axe head..... And how the grooves run perfectly in line with what looks like a sedimentary line in the rock..... It's all almost too perfect. I haven't seen any photos of other axe heads on line that look like this one..... Others are much duller, smoother and less obvious. Maybe it only a few hundred years old. IDK.
it reminds me quite a bit of one i found years ago which turned out to be a concretion. mine looked like a perfect pair of goggles!
LoL, that is funny.... That sort of scenerio crossed my mind before..... Although it is clear that this is not concrete or any man made material. Pretty sure it is natural stone... Granite I would guess. I have a lot of other blue/gray stone just like this one on the property, along with a ton of other granite...... You wouldn't believe the amount of large & small boulders and rocks I have on this 2 acres..... Edge of a glacier or something maybe.
If anyone has knowledge of this type of artifact, type of stone this is, or hint of what era it might be from, it would be much appreciated.
The strata in the middle would be a weak point and makes me question that it would be used for any kind of impact use. I have enough knowledge to be dangerous and it's not my area of expertise. Just stating my 2¢ worth.

Yea, it could very well be a natural rock formation.... Looking at it closely and handling it, makes it really hard to believe/accept that, but anything is possible. I've had it displayed on my fireplace mantle for 15 years.... I'd like to finally know what it is...
Do you have a University near you? Contact a geologist. They love seeing these things.
