I received this brass encased 1920D penny when I was a child... From Chicago in the 1950's, it has so far defied an explanation of why or what it was used for. I posted it on Collectors Universe and saw postings for a 1919 penny and 1907 and 1900 Indian Head pennies. Those coins had the same brass case, but had 3 holes drilled equidistant around the coin.

Any thoughts? Not a gear, not a car distributor points gap, a spacer???

I remember this design from when I was a kid ( also 1950's ) I think I still have one in the original packet, unopened they came in. They were a fad sort of. Some had different thickness fingers and were actually a feeler gauge for spark plugs some were screw drivers to remove small screws. I'll see if I can find mine and if so post the name on the package. I won't open it because I will be giving it to my 13 year old collector grandson.

fhrjr2 - That idea was tossed around on line (https://forums.collectors.com/discussion/1001507/encased-coins-and-a-mystery) It would be interesting if you could finally clear up their use. I'll keep watching.

Haven't been able to go find it yet. Youngest son up north was put in hospital last night so been otherwise occupied. Will do my best to have a look for it today.

I remember similar ones (with small hole) in the 70s sold as key chain screwdrivers.
