Hello everyone!!
In continuation of my fox related collectibles, this is my cast iron fox head boot scraper. This was made in the 1930's by a company called B.B. Butt Co. in Baltimore, MD. The initials BB are cast into the top corner as well (shown in pic #3). After much research, I found that the B.B. Butt Co. was started, owned and operated by a lady named Savannah Barrett Butt (of Baltimore, MD) who, in May 1938, patented a boot scraper design, or foot scraper if you will. I was able to locate the actual patent. It appears that Mrs. Savannah Barrett Butt's husband, Edward H. Butt, passed away in 1929 and by 1932 the depression had left her with a diminished income. That's when she turned to black smithing. She designed and made anything from decorative horseshoes, doorstops and foot scrapers. I have an article from a 1938 Baltimore newspaper (pic #4) that explains how Mrs. Butt started this company. She was indeed a very industrious and interesting lady.
The piece measures 19" long, 6 3/4" wide and weighs roughly 20lbs. I used soft sand to sandblast about 4 coats of thick paint and rust from this boot scraper. Once the sandblasting was complete, I was very impressed with the extreme detailing of the fox heads, from the eyes, mouths, whiskers and ears. I repainted it and replaced the old worn out brushes.
Thanks very much for stopping in to check out my cast iron fox head boot scraper!!

Nice job on the research, hope it pans out. I enjoy finding out cool stuff about items. And nice job with the restore. You can see the face details. I bet it was almost gone with the 4 layers of paint before... I used to smoke Big Butt cigars BB.. in the early 2000s. Cigar companies change names a lot. They were great cigars, but long gone. Nowadays only smoke on occasion..and it's Fuente Fuente Opusx for me!
Very nice!!
Awesome pair of black cast iron fox heads, this boot scraper is a wonderful piece Scott & your restore is top notch as always
Thanks dav2n01!! I too love finding out the history of my items. The Baltimore Historical Society has responded to me and they're working on finding info on the B.B. Butt Co. Hopefully, by next month they'll have some good information for me.
