This Noritake bone china vase is about 8.6" high. It is stamped on the bottom and came in the original presentation box with some documentation. It is in new condition but was made in 1976 according to the Noritake Collector's Guild web site. I am not sure if it is new old stock or has just been in some collector's closet for the past 44 years. It was only $9 so hard to pass up and was my first December purchase. Some of these 1970s Noritake Studio Collection vases had elaborate decoration but this one is pretty simply adorned with a black rim. Simple, but elegant. Also, according to the Noritake Collector's Guild site, this vase was made for domestic sale in Japan.

      The glaze is outstanding.
The perfection of this next to some of your freehand pieces would be a perfect reference for the dichotomy of Japanese craft.

Thanks for your comments, Karen! Yeah, it is pretty remarkable that a society which embraces the concept of wabi sabi also embraces the perfection embodied in this vase. I may do a comparison post someday!

Thanks for your comment and observations, Eileen! Yes Noritake has been around for a while. It was founded in 1904 the village of Noritake, Japan with express goal making porcelain for export to the West. Not as old as some Japanese kilns but now well into their second century. I suspect that they drew on many experienced artisans from other kilns in the beginning.
