This 1 1-2"L horned owl brooch has a crosshatch goldtone body of freshwater pearls and two carnelian cab eyes. By Edward Swoboda of Los Angeles CA (1956-1985), a designer who incorporated real gems into costume settings, this piece ca late 1960s
Another Winner!! A great looking horned owl brooch!! :)
Jenni, You collection is just beautiful. Every piece a stunning example. Love this owl - just gorgeous. Running out of superlative adjectives.
Happy New Year!!
Great looking little horned owl, I adore how large and sparkly his eyes are, like the sort of owl you might see hooting on a branch outside a haunted house! I have to say I'm really impressed by those two carnelians, I thought they were rubies, all the carnelian pieces I have tend to be more orange in tint but those are a lovely deep pink-red. :)
Cute little owl Jenni!!
Perfect piece with a personality !~
Well done Jenni, this is a very impressionable piece, and I love the pearls. He/She is by the same artist as my Jade Owl however, this one show character. Nice Owl.

Thanks Kurt for your fantastic comment, I really hoped this horned owl would appeal to you he's rather unique with the real gem design. A happy & healthy new year ahead for us all!
Maureen thank you so much for your beautiful words about my collection, you can never run out of nice things to say to me & I'm always grateful and happy to hear them! Your tasteful elegant pieces are top notch to me as well, and I love your interesting background info I learn so much - BTW your jewelry historian blog is really fab, it was great to read that Carolee's patriotic bow brooch (which I also have) was inspired by Cartier, no wonder it's such a creative design. Love the way costumers put their own spin on classic pieces, i.e. Cartier's leopards & the awesome collection owned by the Duchess of Windsor
Thanks so much Lauren for your fabulous comment & great imagery, this owl's sparkling all-seeing eyes would look cool with him sitting in a tree near a haunted house calling "whoo-whoo"! The round bright red eyes were described as carnelian but ruby is just as good, this designer always used real gems incl jade, rose quartz, pearls, carnelian, peridot & turquoise that were always pretty accents
Thank you Scott for your super compliment, this guy certainly brings the cute factor & I love his "wizened" expression lol
Phil he is a sassy one, thank you for your great comment about his personality, I'd say this hootie is looking very intently at something and is proud of his pearly self!
Thank you Lori for your wonderful comment, I was so delighted to see your beautiful jade Swoboda graduate owl, it's adorable. I have had this pearly one for some time, but seeing yours remembered I had never posted it. I'm a big fan of Swoboda esp. the figurals & very glad you like that co. too, your flower cart is also lovely
MrsT thank you for your lovely comment about my 'cute hoot,' very glad you liked him and totally appreciate the kind praise
I love costume jewellery and it’s neat to think this has actual semi precious bits in it.
Plus it’s an owl, so why wouldn’t it be wonderful.
Thank you Karen my friend for the lovely praise, this white pearl owl has turned a shade of blush pink from the compliments! This designer Swoboda was very innovative using real gemstones in costume metal settings (most were goldtone, I have several of the animals), then a few other co's followed suit but his were always best and most creative
