USN Multi-Purpose Signalling Light - Box
8 1/2" tall
Inside 10 1/2" x 11"
I have several military items in my collection. I have a small collection of military storage boxes. They are very handy. As a matter of fact, I was using this as a step stool to hang a picture.
This box held a United States Navy Multi-Purpose Signalling Light. Its interesting ...there is a small door to run cables to the battery that would be mounted inside. The door also closes when not in use. The earlier WWII boxes didn't have a door, only a hole. My guess is this is from the 1950s, but could be earlier.
Has a single effective latch, very strong and efficient. This box also has a built in stand on the right side, possibly to hold the light. Earlier boxes did not have this either. There is a leather wrapped handle on top. I imagine it would be very heavy.
Would be a cool battery tray on an old jeep or rat rod! I use it as a display piece mixed in with other items.
Lights like this were used by USN personnel on landing crews or in small boats to signal nearby ships or aircraft.
I'll provide a link in the comments, so you can see what the whole set up would have looked like.
Here's the link to WWII model, so you can see what the contents would look like.
