I have had this old WWII for 30 years in a drawer but can't identify the branch of service. Anyone have an idea?

Looks similar to WWII merchant marine cap badge, but your missing details...maybe a souvenir item?

Agree, it appears to be merchant marine. Could the anchor have fallen off? There is a hole in the shield. I don't think it is a souvenir as back is stamped "sterling". It as pin on hinge with clasp in back so was probably used on the uniform?

Can u post a picture of the back of the badge?
      Very cool piece!

I just added a picture of the back

Oh OK..I'm on my phone, so didn't notice the hole. Now that I zoomed in, I can see it. The back should tell you age by the clasp style..
