Because every so often the job requires just a little bit larger 'tool' than those flimsy little ones commonly found in people's kitchen drawers...?? <lolol> Pic2 shows it is nearly a whopping 32" long, its bizness end roughly 7" but only a little over 3" w. It does appear to have been hand carved and not at all 'finely finished', and its handle has a distinct 'curve' to it.

Seriously, I don't really know whether this is any sort of actual kitchen utensil, or just something meant to be decorative. I could almost see something like this used in a 25gal prison soup kettle, for instance, or as 1/2 of a 'statement' salad set?? There are no markings whatsoever on it.

In Australia, a slang term for a sports team (usually football) that ends the season at the bottom of the table is "wooden spooner". A giant wooden spoon is sometimes given as a joke item to anyone who's finished last in a competition... I don't know if you have that same concept in the US, but if so, maybe this was once originally presented to a truly epic loser?
The wooden spoon is also a symbol here for being a "stirrer" - that is, someone who's always stirring up trouble, dissenting, or just generally an annoying jerk. Once again, I've seen the odd giant wooden spoon used as a novelty gift for such an individual. I dare say some would react positively at being regarded this way, & proudly display the oversized spoon on their wall. Others may have found it insulting, & thus gave it away to a thrift store/op shop...

It seems to be a bit thick for it, but could it be a shoe horn?
