This Uranium glass boat was produced by Edward Bolton (great surname) of Warrington to commemorate the heroics of Grace Darling, a lighthouse keeper's daughter, it has her name moulded into the stern. The design has the Registered No. 39414 from 11/12/1885 and the name is also registered as RD.No. 23527 from 11/3/1885 (also moulded in). It is about 11" long and quite rare in uranium glass, I'm very pleased to have bought it.

Another interesting learning experience thanks to CW members: I did not know of Grace Darling so I did some reading. I’m so glad to have “met” her...what a girl!!

Sadly she died at the age of only 27. Further research has revealed that the design for this boat was inspired, shall I say, by a celery dish made by the American company Hobbs Brockunier.

Oh well, even if inspired by a humble celery dish, the lovely boat keeps Grace Darling’s name and story alive.
      She had a beautiful name.
