Here are two vintage glass donkeys. The 5 1-2"H x 6"W clear glass donkey is by Pilgrim Glass of WV and is made of lead crystal from 1972 (see ad from Pilgrim's '72 catalog, item #911). The 2 3-4"H x 6"W cobalt blue glass donkey with cart is a 30s thru '60s design made by several companies including Jeannette Glass of PA and came in many colors as well as clear glass

The see through donkey looks like an ibex actually, his ears look like lovely flowing horns- the catalogue looks interesting too- my favorites being the whale and polar bear! And probably if I had that little blue donkey(great color of blue too!) he'd probably end up storing bits and bobs in it for me, like jewelry pieces and things...:P

Thanks dav2 for your super comment, yes what IS that cart supposed to be carrying! At a 2 x4" size, many uses come to mind, it is often called a candy dish or salt holder but I like Karen's idea better...

Karen you sly one, you nailed it, perfect for holding brooches and\or other jewelry, I am definitely going to plan on that one - it beats my husband's idea of using it for his spare change lol :) Thank you for your always fabulous & creative comment

Thanks Lauren for your wonderful comment and I totally agree that the clear glass Pilgrim donkey's ears are quite a funny shape, but it seems the WV glassmakers of that period did used to give their animals offbeat features - this can also be seen in my Pilgrim rabbits, Kanawha doe, Viking & other elongated horse noses etc. The Pilgrim donkeys (they also made a smaller colored version) are super rare and I was delighted to find this one as I've about exhausted their glass animal line. Glad you liked the blue one too, bits & bobs are a great idea also, the cart could be nice for office supplies like paper clips & rubber bands as well

Phil & Ken thank you so much for the love, you guys are the best and I'm so grateful for your kind support

Phil the clear donkey is absolutely a joy to hold, very smooth and rather heavy glass and not too delicate as my smaller handmade glass animals are, so I'm not as worried about easy breakage when taking pix. Thank you my friend for your wonderful comment :)

Thank you Kinki for your lovely praise, I am so delighted that you enjoyed this pair of donkeys. Agree that the clear donkey head is a bit odd, they do have big ears but those are way exaggerated doncha think. I love the blue cart too, the donkey looks about to take off!

The blue one looks like a candy dish which were sold, as in Bedroom and Bathroom glass of the 30's to 40's !~

Do you have the turtle as in that drawing?

I don't have those books anymore called Bedroom and Bathroom Glassware of the Depression. That is not the exact title, but close. You should be able to find the books in your city library. Our libraries are closed because of the covid depression as they all should be !~
    12. PhilDMorris PhilDMorris, 4 years ago
The books are by Collector Books who are the publishers.

Sorry to take over your page. They also show the poodle and the more common deer lid which is my fave. Those figurals were popular in 70's to 90's, and always picked up at most collector shows.

Hi Phil, you can take over my page anytime, love your input always! No I don't have the Pilgrim lead crystal turtle, or any of the others on that page - my preference is always colored glass animals so I do have the turtle in amber I believe, posted as a combo with a Kramer turtle (their colored glass animals were much smaller & lighter weight than the lead crystal ones in the ad). Yes the donkey with cart was mostly called a candy dish and originally made in the depression era, I'm sure mine is a reissue, and there were other makers including KR Haley Glass. I have a couple really good glass animal reference books plus of course online reference, but I really do miss libraries for their great ref books - I hope sometime this yr we will all get the vaccine and this awful pandemic will be OVER, we just need to have faith & more patience :) Stay well my friend luv Jenni
