Fancy Footed Silver Tray. Appears to be very old. Marked "Black. Starr & Frost" . I looked that up and can see it was a silver company. The mystery is I don't see any other marks. Possibly could be worn out? I'm assuming it is silver and not silver plate...is heavy, no magnetic properties.
I'm pretty sure you are assuming correctly saying it's silver. The puzzling part is i can't see any stamps. There should be both a sterling and a identifying number around the edges but as you say maybe they're worn off.
Thanks lugnuts--if you are familiar with this company, where would any other marks typically be? I've looked and felt around, but haven't detected anything. There is some tarnishing, but I'm assuming I'd feel an etch or stamp. The "B" on Black is almost worn down though, so, who knows...
This is another type of dish but the markings are usually in the same places. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Starr-Frost-Floral-Sterling-Bowl-Numbered-Gently-Polished-7-in-dia/164387276170?_trkparms=aid%3D1110009%26algo%3DSPLICE.COMPLISTINGS%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D20201210111452%26meid%3D3a4b4ea7042248b089e09770ad6edb7c%26pid%3D101196%26rk%3D12%26rkt%3D12%26mehot%3Dnone%26sd%3D184637659806%26itm%3D164387276170%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DItemStripV101HighAdFee&_trksid=p2047675.c101196.m2219
Thanks again lugnuts--the example you linked to is really useful.
I examined again, and...nothing. The back is really smooth except for the Black, Starr & Frost, which is really small and almost gets lost too(The flat underside of the tray is 12" across). I'm going to swap in a full underside view of the back of tray in my photos--the co name is below and slightly right to the top foot.
Would be nice to further identify but may not be possible.
I would polish it and see if you can find anything. Good luck.
