amethyst colored pendant on pearlish beaded necklace

First thing outta the bin this afternoon to be shown on its own.

I am assuming that everything about this necklace is "faux". Nonetheless it is a pretty thing, the faceted (both sides) jewel is about 1-3/4" long and 1" wide, its pearlish beaded strand about 12" long doubled, it appears loose-beaded on string without a clasp.

What I *don't* understand about this piece is forzactly why it has the two little 'appendages' to the beads, each one of those finished with a velvet fabric strap about 5" long. What the cr*p would those be for?? To tie together in a bow, to tie to something else, or ??? Anybody gots a clue for me?? <beg>
