Are horror bowls a thing?

Anyone know what this is or what it's supposed to be? Normally I'd guess the obvious answer of bowl, but it would be a tad leaky. I found it with some items that I think my Gramps must have gotten at an auction a few years back. It's REALLY hard - sort of wrought iron/raku-esque. Definitely ceramic, though... I think. No marks that I can see, so I'm leaning more towards it being a hobbyist piece. Unless one of you recognizes it. It does share some similarities with pre columbian blackware pottery, I guess, so maybe it's Mayan? Although, the face would probably be less goofy and more serious looking if it were Mayan. They were such a dark and twisty bunch. Fingers crossed that someone in here know more ! Thanks!!!
