    Still a mystery, is not a shell or wood, or stone of any kind, as I stated, it is all organic, was very deep on rock ledge. It has a reptile skin or something, looks like hole is hand drilled...any help now we know what it is not? Both halves are hollow. Found in Maine.

      I'm not sure how big it is from the pics but if its the size it kinda looks like (~3" long?) and with the way you describe it, I'd wonder if it has its origins as a "snake rattle"...?? Just SWAG... (Scientific Wild-A** Guess) ;-) :-)

      This is not a chiton, it has been thoroughly examined by Daniel Hartline, marine biologist at the Hartline Institute, Hawaii
