This is called the Zeeland knot (Zeeland is a province of the Netherlands on the west coast and is largely located on the North Sea) and is made with filigree technique, wire work of silver or gold with which the buttons are built up. The motif has a number of typical "spiders". This is a rosette of spiral wire with a soldered ball in the middle. Initially this looked like a spider where the eight threads of the rosette formed the legs. A knot has a central, larger spider that is flanked by about eight to fourteen smaller spider.
