Pair of Ninth plate images housed in an original thermoplastic case. Ambrotypes had a short period of use in the United States. They were popular from about 1854- 1865. In the UK, ambrotypes continued to be made and sold through the 19th century.

These cases were expensive in the era, but they really add to the eye appeal of an image and continue to do so today.

The pair of images are original to the case-- an old man and grandchild would be my guess.

The old man shows an old eye injury with closed lid and sunken around the socket-- safe to assume that he was blind in that eye.

My original ambrotypes/ case and photos-- don't copy/ reproduce in any form without permission.

"thermoplastic"-- patented in 1854. Also often called "Union Case". It is a combination of shellac and wood fibers that were heated (thermo), dyed and then pressed into molds.

After the Civil War, these fell out of favor due to the cost.

      Thanks much watch-- appreciate it!

The rounded corner cases seem to stand the test of time better than the square corner cases. This does have some minor edge flea bites, but overall not bad!
