    Hello everyone!!
I just acquired two antique cast iron Japanese hares. This is the first of those two. This one, like all the other Japanese hares in my collection, is made of cast iron and has a bronze finish. As I've mentioned in my other posts, bronze was scarce in Japan over 100 years ago, so they cast their sculptures of cast iron and finished them to resemble bronze. This one is quite detailed, even it's paws are well defined on the bottom. It measures 10" long, 5 1/2" wide, 6" tall and weighs approximately 7lbs.

Thanks for stopping in for a look!!!
    Scott

I really like how the Japanese go to the extra effort in detailing the pads and toes of the rabbit's feet. Nice one!

      kwqd,
Thanks! This one is very similar to the one in your collection, only much larger. I too love the way the Japanese leave out no details.

More than twice as heavy and long as mine! How can you tell when they are Japanese?
    14. jscott0363 jscott0363, 4 years ago
The Japanese versions are pretty unmistakable. Most are cast iron and all have this same type of bronze finish. Not all are cast iron though. Some are actually bronze. These two actually came from Japan, as have most of my others.

This is one wise rabbit. You'll never get past without this rabbit's approval. Looks very content in it's surroundings. What a great find.

Thanks very much!! Yep, he's definitely very content looking. He's guarding the path to Mr. McGregor's garden:)
