Agate! This has to be my favorite of all my brooches. Early 1900’s based on pin, clasp, pin length and flat mechanism. The metal is more than likely pinchbeck, but so beautifully ornate and detailed!!
It looks as if there’s an occlusion on the bottom. However, it isn’t. From the reflection you can see it is a natural striation of the stone. Despite the ornate work, it is very light. It is one of the first pieces I ever collected and I remember buying it from an English dealer on eBay. It’s what started this whole obsession. I don’t know whether to be grateful to it, or not! LOL
Brooches are an addiction of mine... >..< lol
Yours is a very nice Victorian banded agate and pinchbeck piece!
Kudos for buying this as your first one ;-))
Thank you Eileen and Kyra!!!! Please, hear what I have to say now: I would’ve never gotten close to the date or known it was probably pinchbeck (or known wtheck pb was!!) or even thought to look at the pin mechanism had it not been for the two of you along with those here at CW-Mary. Elisabeth, Karen, Gillian and Fort Apache (Did I ever get a name?) and others in our tight knit group. I still don’t know anything… But the minuscule details I’ve been able to retain (which is always suspect when it’s my retention ability to which we’re referring-HAH!) have come from all of you. And the fact you take the time to keep commenting on my posts and confirming, correcting and/or contributing means more to me than you’ll ever know! Every time I post a piece, checking my email actually becomes exciting for once. When I see a response, it brightens my whole day! Especially when one of you tells me something about one of my pieces that I can pass along to my elderly friend. She was a collector as well and used to be well enough to go and find unique pieces. She had a consignment booth (for over a decade-that’s how we met-surprise!!) where she resold her carefully cultivated pieces. It’s gone now, but the passion never fades. So, I think it goes to show that we really never know how many people we actually touch when we help. And all of you have really brought unexpected joy to more than one life. I’m pretty sure you’re all going to get an upgrade on your wings and haloes! ;) Thank you again, friends!
