I recently acquired an early 1900’s Seth Thomas Adamantine Red-Mahogany Antique Mantel Clock. The Seller who serviced the clock believed it all to be original. Yet neither he nor I can find any date code stamp on bottom like many of this style in that era. The label was gone when Seller purchased it who sold it to me. We did see these numbers written in pencil on inside of wooden back cover: 948MR over another 9657MR

I’d like to nail down a date, but so far my best guess is circ. 1908-1916. We can’t find it in any of Seth Thomas Catalogs so far or the Book, Seth Thomas Clocks & Movements - Tran Duy Ly

The clock’s paper dial was not replaced during service and thought to be original. The brass bezel cover is beaded with the common pie crust design. 8 Day Time and Strike Movement is a model 89C with brass cup bell and steel gong. It runs fine.

4 half columns are recessed back mounted on wooden pads with moulding and the front 2 half columns mount directly to the base and top. These are taller than the others.

The front moulding pads stop flush with the sides where the lion heads are and do not wrap around like most. The top trim gradually steps down like some.

Any clues as to a more definite date would be appreciated.

Movement on my clock is stamped 89C which identifies it as an 89 series with C cup bell. The 89 movement was not used in Seth Thomas clocks until around 1900, 1901. Prior to that mantel clocks had the 44 model known as “Hip Movement “(stamped “3 5/8” indicates pendulum length) used in late 1800’s up til around 1900. Other movements prior to 89 stamped seem identical but are stamped “4 1/2” indicating pendulum length.
