This is a stone figure from the Diquís culture in Costa Rica - made sometime between 500 and 1200 years ago. This is an unusual one with huge buck teeth - or the mouth of a Jaguar. These were placed in front of people's homes to keep evil spirits away, supposedly. This thing is LARGE and HEAVY at 18" tall. I found it today in a junk shop in Berkeley, CA yesterday.\ Coincidentally i have a much smaller carved female figure from the same culture. i wonder what the huge buck teeth represent?

It's cool, but about 1000 yrs younger than mine! The Diquís culture in Costa Rica died out or was completely transformed around the time of the Spanish Invasion - 1500-1600s. Not much is known about their culture, but these stone totems have been found in large numbers throughout the region.
