This cameo comes from my mother's side of the family. I don't know who among all my relations may have the cameo earrings mentioned in the note. I would like to reunite them all, but maybe they were never really a set anyway. Does anyone collect these? Is this figure unusual, is she an angel, or just floating or dancing?
What do you think? Should I ask all my aunts and uncles (there are six of them)? What would you do? I will not have any kids, so maybe I should give this away?
I am never tempted to wear this, as it seems maybe fragile, and I am not sure how I would pair it with any outfit.
Absolutely gorgeous antique cameo, the lady is poetry in motion! Wonderful family heirloom
Thank you Newfld!
I think the figure is a goddess, possibly Terpsichore, the goddess of dance.
Looking at the hinge and pin this would be late 19th Century I think. That is the end of any cameo knowledge I have!
She is beautiful.
She is a dancer, based on one found in a fresco at Herculaneum. Wonderful piece to have with the family provenance. No niece to pass it on to? As much as I sometimes benefit when they come on the market, I hate to see heirlooms leave the family.
Perfect that your grandmother has the name of a Greek goddess. :)
Hi! Thank you for sharing your love and expertise! It is really neat to know even a little bit more about this tiny work of art.
