I rarely buy Japanese pottery because I am overloaded with glass but after seeing the lovely pieces on here from Kwqd and Rhineisfine this pair was irresistible.
Thrown with a slightly angled scored line they have a beautifully formed foot and rim and some fingers dents for easy grip. After throwing they have been glazed black on the outside, over which has been randomly laid silver sheets. Over that, one has had a translucent blue glaze applied, the other a red glaze. The result is a variety of shading, colour changes, and textural change from the silver foil crackling.
I asked on a Japanese collectors group and was advised it reads Kutani Tomei, and the style is called underglaze colored silver foil and is employed by a variety of artists.
Heights 9cm and 8cm.
Really pretty set! Great colors, Karen! Are these meoto yunomi, one cup smaller than the other?
