Beatles clothing patch-1964

As "Beatlemania" was sweeping across England and parts of Europe in late 1963, Beatles manager Brian Epstein was being swamped with offers to put the Beatles image on toys...dolls...cups...saucers...etc. Epstein came to an agreement with his cousin, Raymond Weldon to produce a black pullover sweater like The Beatles wore on the cover of their US album, "Meet The Beatles". The contract was confirmed on January 31, 1964. The sweater came with a cloth patch that said,"The Beatles"...and had the first names of the members sewn on. The patch was to be attached to the front of the garment. It was an expensive item to make. When sales slowed down, Weldon found that he was stuck with a large number of patches. Epstein allowed his cousin to sell the patches separately. They were advertised in Beatles Monthly Magazine starting in March 1964....and had a special offer with Kelloggs "Rice Krispies." cereal. In 1988, Christie's Auctions in London bought up most of the patches and sold them at auction!
