So Mikasa is a midline high volume glass exporter, but that doesn't mean they don't offer some beautiful glass. This basket was designed by Larry Laslo during the time he worked for them in the 1980s. The label on base reads Laslo for Mikasa Japan. Larry Laslo was born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, studied at the Philadelphia College of Art, moved to New York where he illustrated for several important journals, including Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, GQ, and Playboy. He went on to design furniture, and started his own business. This beautiful basket was produced in 1982. I hope you enjoy looking at it!

Mikasa doesn't make anything. They are an importer/exporter of products from around the world. Your basket was made in Japan by Joetsu Crystal Glass Co., part of their Kurata line.

I think all Japanese art glass sold by Miskasa was Kurata. It has been a while since I looked at the Miskasa/Kurata partnership, so my memory is a bit vague on this. The Larry Laslo/Mikasa Japanese glass was made by Kurata (Joetsu).... I think Mikasa eventually contracted with glass makers in other countries to make Larry Laslo marked glass, but don't remember which countries...

Thanks, kwqd, appreciate the correction, I only meant to say that Mikasa is not known for art glass production, it is a production line glass corporation. Kurata makes beautiful glass, I hadn't seen this information about these baskets, so thank you for that.

It's gorgeous and not one I have seen by Kurata for Mikasa. I love the ribs.
From about the mid 90s most Mikasa glass came from Germany.
