This little bottle is 2.25" high x 1.75" wide x .75" deep. The lid was largely intact, though not on straight, when I removed it to clean the bottle and examine the contents, when a chunk of it broke off. It is very rotten. The bottle contained a small amount of white powder and some of it was also caked under the lid. The bottle has a reddish/silver/purple sheen which washes out under bright light. The last image of the bottom shows it best. There are several bubbles in the glass of the bottle and it has a lean to it if not set down squarely. No idea of age or purpose. Guessing post-1910 due to the type of screw top.

I found this today as I was putting together a shelter for a stray cat that I fear is about to give birth in my back yard. My garage and my rear neighbor's garage back up to one another, with about a four foot gap between them. There has been a groundhog burrow under my neighbors garage for many (many) years inhabited by many (many) generations of ground hogs who do spring cleaning every year and kick a bunch of dirt out of their hole into the space between the garages. Every once in a while I find some remnant of the past, probably from an old dump or trash pile which is now under the neighbor's garage.

I have no doubt that some CW bottle guy or bottle gal knows exactly what this is, so I am sitting in front of my computer, hands folded in my lap, waiting to be educated.

That’s nice of the groundhogs to bring the interesting bottle to the surface. And it’s nice of you to prepare a shelter for the cat.

Thanks for your comments Watchsearcher! Never know what I am going to find in my yard. My house was built in 1883 and the oldest house on the block dates to the 1860s, so there must have been several cisterns, outhouses, trash piles, etc., on my block. I will probably try to trap her, if I can be sure she hasn't already had her kittens. It is still really cold here at night and it has been rainy, too, so want to give her kittens a chance.

Thanks for loving my little mystery bottle RichmondLori, fortapache, Vynil33rpm, Thomas, jscott0363, PhilDMorris, Jenni, Kevin, Watchsearcher and dav2no1!

We are having similar cat situations, kwqd. I gave an adult male stray cat a warm shelter and food all winter. Toward the end of February, a second cat-a starving pregnant female cat showed up. I gave her food and shelter also. One morning a couple of weeks later, she came out of the cat house when I brought the food out. I heard a tiny kitten voice, looked in the cat house and found 1 tiny black and white newborn kitten.
Mama cat stayed around until she weaned the baby, then she rejected the little fella and left.
The kitten is now my constant companion and a joy.
Mama cat is now coming back around, pregnant again. I bought an animal trap to capture her so, hopefully, Monday morning she will be getting surgery to break the cycle. Next night, I plan to trap the male cat for the same purpose. They are all welcome and treated very well but 3 unplanned for cats are enough!

I hope my new little girl has one, not twelve, kittens! I worked with a TNR for ten years, and still snag and fix any unaltered cats that stop by.... The paramour of this new little girl was only around for a few days and then left but was very possessive of her so pretty he was the papa. He has apparently escaped the knife. Never saw him before or since. He may still be around have to see if he is trappable.

. . . I remember once when I found a small glass bottle with a little bit of white powder in it . . . but that was in a club and the bottle certainly wasn't antique . . . <oops><nono><eeek>
