I recently got this trunk out of a storage unit of stuff that was removed from my grandfather's house over twenty years ago and I'm just curious as to how old it might be. The only thing I've been able to identify is the one intact latch. According to my internet search, the latches were made by Taylor and the size is referred to as #1 (1 being the smallest) and were in use from the 1880s until the early 1900s. And while Taylor did make trunks, their hardware was used by various makers, so that is no indication that the trunk was made by them. I'm also curious to know if the picture in the trunk lid was put there by the maker or if that was something that was added later. And lastly, I'm also curious about the number stenciled on one of the wooden slats on the bottom. At first I thought it might have been my grandfather's Army serial # (he served in France during WWI and in China in the 1920s), but I've never seen a serial # with a decimal. So was this put there by the maker or was it some type of lading identification?
Thanks in advance for taking the time to read this and look at the pictures. And any help identifying this trunk or any other information regarding it will be appreciated.
