    Update: I think ho2cultcha is right! I looked up “cast iron grate for gas stove” and got the picture that I added up above. Thank you so much for satisfying our curiosity! Thank you, everyone, for your comments. We were digging a hole to plant a gardenia in our front yard yesterday and discovered this piece. Our house was built in 1977, so we’re thinking it may not be something super old, but it’s interesting to us and we just can’t figure it out. Thanks for any help you can give to solve our mystery!

      The object is about 4 inches by 2.5 inches. It looks like something broke off at each end of the arched piece. (The napkin is 6x6 square.
