Anyone know what this is? Found in Granny's sewing basket. Silver plated. I think early to mid 1900's.

Strange little item, hopefully we can figure it out..

Is there any markings on it? Does it swivel?
    3. Gillian, 3 years ago
Perhaps a sewing machine needle for special stitch?

I've got no clue what it really is, but it'd make a nifty pendant regardless...people would prolly be constantly noticing and asking about it...?? ;-)

Hi there, Doesn't seem to swivel. Will douse it in WD40 to see if it moves. The ring looks like it is added, so there is a hole that may be used for attaching it to something. Bit pointed to make a safe pendant. Lol!

The ring end looks like there's a button or screw there...and that piece may Swivel? And the hook end looks like it should pivot back and forth?

      Are the edges sharp?

I’ve never seen any sewing notion like it but if the point and edges are sharp, it might possibly be a device for slicing open very small button holes (where scissors size would be too large for the job).

Can't be a needle - you need somewhere to thread the (sorry) thread.

Ok I’ll hazard a guess. Could it be an internal part of an old sewing machine. I think I remember seeing something similar when I fixed an older machine years ago.
Or it could be a tool used to repair a sewing machine or the foot pedal. I ll ask around.

MaryJim needs to help out by answering the questions that have been asked about the item.

Embroidery pieces needs to be squared before they are framed. This item, if it’s heavy enough, could be a plumb bob so the fabric could be assessed and marked for making it square.
If a picture of all sides would be posted and an actual measurement posted, maybe that would help. I have 2-3 different sizes of paper clips in my desk, so I’m not clear on the size of the device.

If those 2 “wing-like” pieces toggle back and forth, they could indicate something is level.

Not enough information me thinks. What happens if the point is pressed down on, something hard like a piece of wood say, as Watchsearcher asks do the side pieces move up, down, left or right. Dimensions pleeeeeeease.

Maybe a yarn or thread cutter if there’s a gap at the points large enough to slip the yarn or thread thru...and if there are sharp edges. That kind of design for trimming threads would be safer than pointed scissors.
Since there’s a loop on the end, it could have been attached to a sewing chantelain.

Again, more info is needed from the poster of the item.
If it’s any of the things I’ve suggested, I want one!! I might be a handy thing to have.

Maybe a little handy necklace gizmo for a fisherman to cut fishing lines....and it just happened to be in with the sewing items.
