I found this beautiful lamp at a second hand shop. It seems antique but not sure how old. I love that it has a different scene on each side. Can anyone tell me more about what I found if it is Japanese or Chinese? What style of vessel is this shape?
Thanks.
Qilin = The qilin ([t??i?.li?n]; Chinese: ??), or kirin, is a mythical hooved chimerical creature known in Chinese mythology and throughout the East Asian cultural sphere said to appear with the imminent arrival or passing of a sage or illustrious ruler.[1] Qilin are a specific type of the lin mythological family of one-horned beasts.
so there is someone on the qilin , so this is a riding the qilin scene
IMO this is an fantasy combination men paired and wifes paired and a man holding the fan
then we got an wave and cloud design which ought to be early 19 century or or even quite earlier
in the black vertical part is probably an stylised daoist emblem Flute of Han Xiangxi, the Patron Saint of Musicians has the power to make flowers grow and blossom immediately. The Flute is an emblem of harmony and also of the Patron Saint of Fl
in combination whith a peach , so we might get the symbolic interpretation , harmony and long unison
if it is not a flute it possible could a scroll from a sage granted to a student who made his civil service degree
the shape of the vase or lamp is unknown , and is an Frankensteined formed
the vase is quite new , actually i wandered if it glazed
still remains cute
Apostata, thank you for all the information. It's neat to know what the symbolism and characters on the vessel could mean. I was thinking the lamp could have been produced in the late 1970's - early 1980's just going from what tge plug looks like and the shade design that originally came with it. I am using it in my home and it looks fantastic.
