OK -- y'all will either believe my story or not -- but it is ABSOLUTELY TRUE irregardless... :-) :-) :-)
This is a heavy (for its size) cast iron lid that used to be somewhere covering up a hole in a street. I don't know offhand what really lives under these in those holes but it isn't a water meter or service point shutoff, perhaps a 'main' valve of some sort -- nothing that can be very big because it is only a little over 7" across.
It was found recently some 40-50' from the nearest curb, in the front yard of a home where I was mowing the grass. I'm used to picking up a handful of litter there everytime, once or twice over many years there's been some errant chunk of metal something that bounced off of a scrapper's trailer found near the street, but not really things like *this*, and not so far up in the yard...???
Being genuinely puzzled, I really DID closely re-examine the street all around the house and there was ABSOLUTELY NO 'open hole' anywhere within at least half a block either way -- I DUNNO WHERE IT CAME FROM OR HOW IT GOT THERE???? (there's certainly no such hole anywhere in the yard itself?!)
But it had to go somewhere out of the mower's way, and with no better particular place than another, there's the back of the truck...?? ;-)
Now it adorns my back steps railing, until I find someplace better for it..., I guess...??
