    Victorian Brass Skirt Lifter with a Fan Motif. A Skirt Lifter attached to the hem of a dress to lift the dress when needed.. The "tong-like" ends were used to secure it to the hem. A chain was attached to the other end onto the waist band or chatelaine.

      it makes perfect sense to me, considering the large border of the skirts and the weight of the fabric. just thought about when did one use this tool? to change the outfit? to use the toilet? I think I am going to research this further, it totally fascinates me. Lori
