BZZZZZZZZZZZZZTT !!!
These two black boxes, as labeled on their sides in red (one oversprayed) provide DANGER HIGH CURRENT!! ;-)
They're both the same and used to provide the power to light a whole series of "cove lights" in a commercial building, essentially slender glass straight-line tubes about an inch around and 10' long or so, operating like neon sign tubing but glowing white instead of orange/green/blue. (different mixes of gases inside the tubes determines the color) I have a handful of the tubes too, but they are obviously ridiculously fragile and unwieldy things to move and store (not to mention to take pics of) and I haven't attempted to do that again yet... <eeek>
Anyway. these *very heavy* black boxes (~100lbs or so ea.) are transformers that essentially take 115 volts (US wall plug voltage) and multiply it by slightly over 10, to the 12,000 volts those fluorescent tubes need to light up. OH YES, folks, get yourself across those short wire stubs coming outta the ends of each one and you're (dead body?) gonna get thrown ALL ACROSS whatever room you're in, maybe through a wall or two if they're close enough...
BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZTTTTTT...
[think bug zapper, on a much grander scale...]
Made in U.S.A. by ACME ELECTRIC CORPORATION of Cuba, N.Y., their catalog# PF12012-5, probably mid 1960's in age as was the building they came from.
