This is a silver plate Victorian box of some sort made by Meriden Silver Plate Co. It has a hinged slide top. There is a circle on top that looks like it have something in it at one time??? I also believe it had a handle attached to the sides at one time because there are solder marks on both sides. But I can't find out what type of box it was and would appreciate any help in identifying the original intended use of this piece.
What are the dimensions?
The box dimensions are 4" by 3 5/8" and it is 4 1/2" tall.
It is marked on the bottom Meriden Silver Plate Company, Quadruple Plate with the number 01232
It looks like the jewel case portion of the “jewel case and toilet combined” (item 01232, on p. 88) of this order catalog for Meriden Silver Plate Co and other products. It seems a perfume bottle sat in the ring on top. I wonder if the paler spot on the side may have been where other components were affixed, or if yours is a different variation. One step closer to figuring it out anyway. http://www.siamcostumes.com/cutters_guides/pdf/illustrated-catalogue-1889.pdf
P. 88 of the pdf I mean; p. 82 of the catalog itself
@ MMNJ - Very well done finding the Meriden catalogue! I found a lot of their advertisements, and looked through so many of their items.
Thanks so much for help with this positive idea. Really appreciate it.
