I do know these were found around coal mines, and are now extinct.

They are fossil fern tree either roots or bark. They are found in Oklahoma around Grand Lake and other places around the Ozarks. The largest specimen I ever saw was embedded in a cliff overhang in Barry County, Missouri. It was over 7 feet long and 10 inches in diameter.
