    trunkman

A lovely antique trunk. I would like to say that it is a carriage trunk, however I’m not sure what characteristics would lend a trunk to be named as such, as any trunk of this vintage I’ll assume could be loaded onto a carriage. The size seems just right… but I digress. The latch mark suggests the lock maker made locks for the Royal family. The partial label says G. Drinkwater & Wagstaff, from England. Appreciate comments or historical insight or corrections!!

Beautiful trunk!! I was intrigued by the lock. I did a little searching and this is what I found in connection to other similar locks. Some folks, on more than one site, believe that the VR and crown is a reference to Queen Victoria. They said that the initials, "VR" stand for "Victoria Regina" (Latin for "Queen Victoria.) They said that this indicates that the lock was manufactured in the time of her reign (1837 - 1901.) One site also said that the firm of Abraham Thompson of Willenhall, England manufactured padlocks with the letters VR under a crown. Hope this helps. I’ll be interested to hear if you find out anything else.

An image of an intact label. Wondering if yours is the same?
I would imagine this one saw it's way onto a few carriages.
Always safe to call them traveling trunks because that's what they all did.
      It's certainly a nice find T-man.

Nice one!! The lock caught my eye. I have one that I posted about 7 years ago with that same lock.

Thanks for the updated info myoldkyhome, as I have only read one thing in passing and your explanation seems more plausible!

Thanks Drill, that is exactly the full label, there’s enough to make a match.. many thanks always!
