My grandfather was a WWI infantry soldier. Found this flag in a old chest and would love to know anything about it.

The style is of the banners displayed to indicate family members in the service, a star for each. Never seen one with anywhere close to 12.

They were used by businesses as well.

They are known as "son in service flags".

The larger ones like these were more prevalent during WW2.

The Service flag, also called the Blue Star Flag, was designed and patented by WWI Army Captain Robert L. Queisser of the 5th Ohio Infantry who had two sons serving on the front line...

Thank you all for these replies and information. My grandfather had a brother who also served and I found a similar flag with 2 stars, so this makes sense. The 12 starred red flag remains a mystery but I now know more than I did.
