    Hello,
I just picked this up at an estate sale. It's very tightly woven. I know absolutely nothing about it but it just feels good. Is it old or new, is it Native American or an import, and if Native American any ideas what Tribal affiliation? Lots of questions. Thank you for any info.

I am not an expert in these type of artifacts. But my opinion is, that the proportions look too exact vs old pieces. I feel this is a modern copy. But you need an expert to determine that. Plus it doesn't seem to have any age, wear..

I agree but again I am not an expert either. Old would have signs of wear or be sun faded or signs of dust etc.

Thank you both. That is helpful. It doesn't show up in the photo but the lid is a little worn and faded on top, but it doesn't look like the basket is worn or faded. I don't know either!

The basket is Native American, made by the southern Arizona Tohono O'odham tribe (formerly called Papago.) It is a coiled basket, made from yucca, with the design made by stitches of Devil's claw.

The Tohono O'odham are one of the most prolific basket making tribes, and are still producing them. This one probably dates from the last 25 years or so. When the baskets are freshly made, the yucca is a light cream to greenish color, which gradually turns more tan/yellow over time.

Canyonroad is the expert on this stuff.
