I was finally able to take photos of my Loetz Aeolus today; the Aeolus decor dates to 1902. This example is orange for the main body, with applied silver festoons; it measures 5" (12.7cm) tall. I am always interested in how glass makers choose their decor names, so upon looking this one up, I found that Aeolus was mentioned in Greek mythology and in The Odyssey, where he "was the keeper of the winds and king of the island of Aeolia, one of the abrupt rocky Lipara islands close to Sicily." (wikipedia) Perhaps the festoons echo the wind blowing on the waves of the Mediterranean? Anyway, I am very happy to have this one in my collection.
A beautiful piece. Congratulations.
Your photos show this decor off beautifully, such a pretty colour.
Hi Michelle! This is adorable!
Thanks so much, Ales!
Thank you Penny! I tried it against a black background and a white background, and I thought the colors were truest against the white. :)
Thank you, Sammyz!
