I think this is an authentic handcrafted penny candy dispenser. The glass is real. Its not mechanical. There's no actual place to put a penny in, so I assume you just paid the shopkeeper? Is there anyone familiar with these thay might have more info? Thanks
Fantastic vintage piece - did candy ever really just cost a penny, awesome find
This looks like the kit machine they sold in boys life magazine back in the late 50's & early 60's. You bought the kit and put it together to earn a merit badge.
Looks to be late 20th century decorator piece.

Newfld, Yes! Candy did cost a penny at one time, not so very long ago in my own youth.
Store keepers displayed the penny candy on the bottom shelf of the candy rack so it was in easy reach of children.
The store clerk would provide a very small paper bag for children (or adults) to fill with their choices of penny candy.
