He’s a very different glass dish! I love the shade of orange brown he is, it’s a lovely rich autumnal shade, he reminds me of the kind of dish I’ve heard people keeping bonbons in, or is it called ‘saltwater taffy’?! I dunno what saltwater taffy is I’ve just heard of it being kept in fancy glass dishes and if it is saltwater, a turtle dish like this is very appropriate! :P

Lauren thank you for your fabulous comment, isn't this such a cool turtle - what a great knobby back it has, so different! I love the amber-gold-brown color too, very autumnal & I think he'll look great on my Thanksgiving dinner table, perhaps to put rolls in his dish. Ah the mystery of salt water taffy, it is a pretty unique, chewy, often minty flavored pastel candy that is wrapped like holiday pull-crackers, and mostly you find it in beach resort towns such as its originator Atlantic City NJ. It is made primarily of sugar but there is salt in the recipe, just not from sea water - there is a legend which may or may not be true, that a candy shop owner near the beach got flooded by an ocean surge one day, so his candy became soaked in it, and thus began the name saltwater taffy. If it were really made with salty sea water today though, I think we'd all go a little mad lol

Thank you Phil for your terrific compliments, this is a pretty handsome turtle I've had my eye on for awhile. It's usually pretty high priced as it's rather large plus the vintage age, but one day I found it reasonably so here he is! I love to find things that are pictured in my beloved glass & jewelry books, I don't care how popular surfing the 'net is today, there is nothing like poring over a favorite book & finding something classic from it, a most enjoyable feeling :)

Haha! Really cool information there about the illusive taffy! And now I want to try some! :D

Lol Lauren, you will really like the taffy it's fun to eat! If you have any trouble finding it, the book site we call 'ammie' here (don't want to get in trouble with full name referrals!) ships to all countries and they have a nice selection

Thanks Karen & vintagelamp for your fabulous comments & the love, I am so thrilled you both enjoyed this turtle dish, he is very special to me because of that great design - seems to be crawling about, and that fantastic bumpy back!

Really appreciate your kind comment MrsT, yes it would make a good candy dish but I'm thinking roll holder for my Thanksgiving table :)

Yes Jenny it really does look like a prize and I would carry him very carefully. I have always loved turtles and my grandma when I was very young had a car head bobber, I wanted one. Really love that this one can be filled. Must have been expensive, lucky you to find one. The amber is a perfect colour for this beauty !~

Phil & jb, thanks for love and great comment. You're so right Phil, this heavy turtle dish has to be handled with care, it has a very slippery knobby back cover! Your turtle car bobber sounds so fun and fabulous. Oh yes this was an expensive piece, both for size and vintage age, but fortunately on one of the antique sites I got an affordable price. It will be great to fill it with rolls on my Thanksgiving table :)
