There's something about the history of art and design which i find so fascinating. It's another way of understanding the past, present and future, but often one which has meaning beyond words. More of a feeling, color, or even a premonition which allows us to be transported back in time and to have a bit of understanding of the time.
The first pic is by FX Leyendecker - the older brother, i think. Some people say that his work was more developed than his brother's.

No joy on finding a readable version of that December 1934 issue of Country Gentleman, which is a shame, because Paul de Kruif seems to have been a very interesting person:
