This was a super find on eBayAU which arrived yesterday. It was extremely dirty but after a thorough cleaning it's scrubbed up very nicely indeed. What can I say but when I saw this I hit that buy it now button without hesitation...it has everything that I like best in art glass - it's flamboyant (to put it mildly), fancy, & has an ugly/beautiful vibe that I simply adore.
It's on the biggish side, but I've found a spot for it!
The vase is made from three layers of cased glass, clear over bright yellow with a vermilion red interior. It measures 26 cm tall, 14.2 cm across the tightly crimped, J.I.P style top rim, & around 11 cm across the applied footed base.
There is applied decoration in an unusual shade of olive green of a leaf trail with fruit (plums?) which runs down to the base.
The yellow layer contains cadmium & glows orange under UV light.
I'm fairly sure that this is of Bohemian origin. The yellow/orange - red colour scheme is reminiscent of Welz "tomato & yellow" decor, but after seeing it next to a basket in this decor, I can see differences in both the shades of yellow & orange/red. The Welz decor has more of a golden - yellow, whereas this vase is more of a lemon - yellow. The orange - red is much redder on this piece as well.
I have another vase with a similiar yellow ground & olive green applied decoration of flowers which I suspect is a Harrach product.
Anyway, what I DO know is that it isn't Murano glass as it was described in the eBay listing.... :-)
Sweet ..nice write up....
Many thanks, Rocky22222!
Looks like something that I saw in an old Star Trek episode :). Of course, that means that I absolutely love it!!!!
