I bought this deactivated smith and Wesson revolver, I’ve done some research and believe it to be one that was used by the British (British service revolver) it has a 5inch barrel and is .38 calibre, I’m wonder if anyone else can give me any more information on it, the ones I’ve come across don’t have the number stamped on the bottom of the wooden gips so could this be one that was issued to the British army

The V before the serial# indicates it's a Victory Model shipped to England during WWII (1942-45). The rest are British roll marks..and man there's a lot of them on the gun.

Also note the swivel is missing and it's chambered in .38 s&w, not .38 special that's a different round.

I thought it may have been, I also read it could be a lend or lease model that the United States did but it hasn’t got United States property stamped on it, I’m trying to find out more about the number stamped on the grip could it possibly be the squadron number or a soldiers ID number, yeah it has a lot stamped on it, I’m gonna take it to a military expert when he’s back see if he can shed more light on it

Also there should be a serial number stamped on the inside of the cylinder, see if it matches.

You can go to the s&w forum. Those guys will tell you everything about it. Just make sure you read the forum rules, they are picky bastards.

Here's a great post about a similar gun to yours, but a little earlier. The members explain the roll marks and serial numbers in that era, etc.
Not being a member, you may not be able to see the pictures and hopefully the link works..lots of good info if you read it all...

Yeah the numbers on the cylinder and on the bottom of the butt match, thank you I’ll give that a look, I have been on the s&w website you fill a form in, give them the serial number make and model and they’ll be able to tell you the history if they find anything so I’ve emailed them hopefully I’ll hear something back
