For sterilizing something that goes thick thick thin - has trouble standing up on its own? Missing its lid.

it stand on its own fine not sure if it had a lid or not. Thank you

I meant what ever fits through the holes to the bottom. For sterilizing would need a lid.

The number of holes and alignment don't add up for thick, thick, thin. I sooner thing one long item that rests on the bottom plate for support. The two upper plates have the same number of holes that are lined up from the looks. I would agree with needing a top but question why it doesn't show any handles?

That's what I meant, one long piece fitting through the first two levels, and supported/resting on the third. However many holes there are on top level is the total number of what's in the 'pot'. Yes - handles or lack thereof.

I doubt it’s for sterilization since the rack reaches almost to the top of the pot which would not allow for the boiling water to properly cover whatever was to be sterilized.
Additionally, the rack’s handle is so tall, it would need to be removable or the lid would need to be very tall to accommodate it.

If not for heating/boiling something (large test tubes?) maybe it is for cooling/freezing something instead, in a lab instead of a kitchen??

I keep trying to imagine how it could be used to dip skeins of yarn into a vat of dye…..

Maybe it’s meant to hold long stems of flowers or greenery straight while the stems are soaking up glycerine to preserve them.
